Wearing contact lenses can be a daunting thought for many
of us. At Eyes & Optics we help make the transition from glasses to contact lenses seamless and easy.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CONTACT LENSES

Contact lens technology never remains stagnant. Newer materials with higher oxygen transmissibility allow patients to wear their lenses for longer and with greater comfort. These lenses may also be worn overnight in some situations and are perfect for shift workers, emergency workers and those who have to work in hostile environments.

Multifocal contact lenses require a special mention as most people are not aware of this technology, and although not for everybody they do offer a good compromise for patients who work in situations where spectacles present a nuisance such as our tradesmen and outdoor workers. Moisture loving contact lens materials that stay wetter for longer are a priority for this age group as our tear quality becomes thinner with age.

Trialling Contact lenses is easy at Eyes and Optics. Firstly an appointment to determine a patients suitability followed by ordering trial contact lenses, then tuition by either our Optometrists or dispensers. There exists a myriad of contact lens options available with soft, gas permeable and hybrid lens choices and be rest assured we will endeavour to find the most suitable option.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN CONTACT LENSES

Eye ExamAlcon dailies total 1 is a new daily wear contact lens which has enhanced water loving capability with superior oxygen transmissibility providing all day comfort and better health. Silicone has been incorporated in soft lens materials for the last 10 years to improve oxygen flow to the front of the eye and is a product used extensively in marine and outdoor applications to make things waterproof. Unfortunately this shedding of water makes it less compatible with the tears of the eye, so this new contact lens has wrapped the silicone core with a waterloving gel so now a lens is available which has the better oxygen flux combined with improved comfort, or wettability. Worth a trial if red and itchy eyes occur after contact lens wear.

CONTACT LENS WEAR DO'S & DONT'S

  • Always wash, rinse and thoroughly dry hands before handling lenses.
  • Tap water, saliva or homemade saline solution should not be used in the care of your lenses. The use of these solutions is associated with serious eye infections. Only use sealed contact lens specific solutions.
  • Lenses should not be worn and/or be removed where there is:
    - Eye or eyelid inflammation
      or infection
    - Redness, irritation, allergic reaction
      or excessive dryness of the
      ocular surface

  • Daily wear lenses are not indicated for overnight wear, and should be disposed of each day upon removal from the eye. Monthly wear lenses are only to be used for 30 days once the packet has been opened, despite frequency of wear. Discard any lens which has become dehydrated or damaged.
  • Consult your optometrist about wearing lenses during water related activities (swimming, baths) as exposure to such conditions may increase the risk of ocular infection.

  • Environmental factors may impact on the comfort of your contact lenses. Hot and windy conditions can dry out lenses and irritate eyes, and as such, fumes and vapours should be avoided during contact lens wear. Consult your optometrist about contact lens specific eye drops which can be used to remoisten the lens during wear.
